Planning the battery

Umphang is 164 km one way. Every car in our fleet does 300 km or more on a full charge, so the outbound leg is comfortable — but mountain driving uses roughly 20 to 30 percent more than flat roads.

The safest plan is to collect the car fully charged, drive to Umphang, and charge there while you rest before the return leg. We tell you which chargers are actually working before you set off.

Tell us you are heading to Umphang when you book and we will map the stops and check charger status ahead of your travel date.

What the 1,219 curves are like

Allow four to five hours each way rather than the two the distance suggests. The road is narrow, the curves are continuous, and fog sets in during the rainy season.

Put anyone prone to car sickness in the front seat and plan a break every 40 to 50 km. An EV helps here: no gear changes to jolt passengers, and regenerative braking makes long descents much smoother.

Avoid driving the route after dark — there is no street lighting for most of it.

How many days to allow

A return trip in one day is possible but punishing. Two nights is the sensible minimum if you want Thi Lo Su waterfall and the rafting without rushing.

Three days already costs less per day than the daily rate — from THB 3,900 for three days, about THB 1,300 a day.

Anything you want to know

Will an EV handle the climbs?

Easily, and better than a small petrol engine. Full torque is available from a standstill, so there is no waiting for a downshift, and regenerative braking takes the heat out of long descents.

Are there chargers along the way?

Not on the middle stretch of Highway 1090. Charge fully in Mae Sot and charge again in Umphang. We give you the working locations before you leave.

Can I drive outside Tak province?

Yes, with notice. Umphang itself is inside Tak province, where kilometres are unlimited and nothing extra is charged.

What if the battery runs out?

Call us straight away — we have a local team and can arrange recovery. It is very unlikely if you follow the plan we give you; the car warns you well before the battery gets low.
