Google Maps says 165 km and 3 hours 47 minutes. Allow four to five hours each way in practice — that estimate does not account for lorries you cannot overtake, rest stops, or the near-constant slowing for curves.
The road is narrow, the curves are continuous, and there is no street lighting for most of it. Fog and falling rocks are common in the rainy season, so avoid driving it after dark.
Put anyone prone to car sickness in the front seat and plan a break every 40 to 50 km. An EV helps here: no gear changes to jolt passengers, and regenerative braking keeps the brakes cool on long descents.
There is a single public charger in Umphang, at the Sunee fuel station on Sukhumwattana Alley in the town centre. Open 24 hours, phone 081 820 1156.
Google lists it as AC Type 2 22 kW, but recent visitors report a DC 30 kW head was added and that charging is no longer free — you pay through the operator app and need credit loaded in advance. Call ahead to be sure.
There is no public charging anywhere on the middle stretch of Highway 1090. The only workable plan is to leave Mae Sot full and recharge in Umphang while you rest, before the return leg.
All of them can do it, but every one of them has to recharge in Umphang before coming back. No car in our fleet covers the 330 km round trip over mountains on a single charge.
Climbing uses roughly 20 to 30 percent more energy than flat roads, so budget for the 164 km on this route costing about what 200 to 210 km of flat driving would.
The Tesla Model 3 (around 420 km real-world) and BYD Seal 6 (around 380 km) leave the most headroom. The BYD Dolphin (around 340 km) is comfortable. The Geely EX2 (around 300 km) will get there, but with the least in reserve — if you also plan to drive around Umphang, the first two save you watching the battery.
The wildlife sanctuary allows only high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles on the final 25 km track to the waterfall. Sedans, vans, ordinary pickups and motorbikes are not permitted — the track mixes concrete and dirt and turns slippery in the wet.
Park the rental at the ticket booth or the Huai Nong Luang ranger unit and continue in local transport. You must fill in a permit form at the ticket booth before entering.
The sanctuary does not run the rafting trips itself, so book those through an operator or your accommodation in Umphang. The waterfall also opens seasonally — check the dates before you book a car.
A return trip in one day is possible but punishing: eight to ten hours of driving and nothing else. Two nights is the sensible minimum, and it gives the car time to charge while you are out.
Three days already costs less per day than the daily rate — from THB 3,900 for three days, about THB 1,300 a day.
Easily, and better than a small petrol engine. Full torque is available from a standstill, so there is no waiting for a downshift, and regenerative braking takes the heat out of long descents.
On the DC 30 kW head, putting back around 20 kWh takes under an hour, which is enough for the return leg. On the 22 kW AC head, allow two to three hours — not a problem if you are staying the night, since you can leave it plugged in over dinner or overnight.
No. The final 25 km into the waterfall is open to high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles only, and our cars are all road cars. Drive to the ticket booth, park, and take local transport from there.
Yes, with notice. Umphang itself is inside Tak province, so nothing extra is charged.
Call us straight away — we have a local team and can arrange recovery. It is very unlikely if you follow the plan we give you; the car warns you well before the battery gets low.
Send us your dates. We reply within minutes during opening hours.
